We spoke to Massimo Mazzanti at the Sailing Channel in Italy about the tough schedules they had to keep to to report on the daily events of the America's Cup — the world's best-known yacht race.

What do you like best about the Video Toaster?

The Toaster is a complete product with many applications. The most impressive thing is the level of integration between them all: the ability to use graphics files, animations, audio and video without loosing time doing conversion, exporting and importing between the different applications is a real bonus for the integration of this kind of product in the Television production workflow. Another important aspect is the user interface, everything simulates the real instruments present in a TV production studio - everything is really logically placed and because of this, it is incredibly easy to learn to use the Video Toaster.

What could be improved for you?

We would certainly like to see batch capture and a print to tape function along with an alpha channel out; and for our specific market some kind of time-scheduling solution.

Do you need to provide several translations for the programme since it is shown on satellite?

Sailing Channel is a free-to-air channel visible around all Europe. We have a specific agreement in France with TPS and because of this we broadcast in Italian and French. So, all our programs are  translated into French, we also have a project to broadcast for the English-speaking market.

When do you start working on each race?

We are producing a 12-minute programme, and at around 1.00 AM the journalistic team analyse the races and starts to plan the content of the programme. At the same time in Auckland our journalist organises the interviews with the guests. At 4.00 AM the production team starts acquiring the new material from Auckland by video-telephone or downloading mpeg files from an ftp server and assembling the news gathered during the previous day. The production team also produce the graphics content for the race results. At the end of the production process, the entire programme is translated into French. By about 10.00 AM the programme is on air.

And how many people work on each programme?

Two journalists and one technician in Milan and one journalist and one technician in Auckland.

Which of the Toaster's tools do you use for the programme?

In this production the most used tools are ToasterEdit and the ToasterCG.

Some of the titles don't look to be made with ToasterCG, if not, what was used?

Some graphics are produced with Aura and LightWave, but everything produced during the night is done by ToasterCG.

What hardware is the Toaster used with?

We are using a dual Xeon 2.4 GHz with 1 GB of Ram and 280GB of online storage: we can have up to six layers in real time.
