Kiefer is well known for mixing media to give his works a more 3D feel, more textured than just paint. Do you miss that quality in 3D?

I like Anselm Kiefer because of the heroic scale of his work. I also like the fact that he bought an old factory which is just big enough to serve as a studio, where he drives around in a forklift truck to move his work and get from one end of the "studio" to the other. He made a library of books made out of lead. If you want to read one of the books (which you can) you need two weightlifters to get them off the shelf.

I also like their powerful 3D-ness, literally the textures and the vanishing points. I also get excited by the ludicrous abundance of his big paintings. This is the only thing you cannot have with screen art. This is why I find it is so inspiring. This is a good website of his work.

Yes, I miss the tactile quality of real 3D and I am already planning to build a studio in my garden to escape into reality when I find the time.

Recently one of your images appeared on the Apple website. How did that happen?

I think they must have spotted it on your gallery because William Vaughan at NewTek US asked me whether they could use it. Anyway, I already had some positive responses as a result.

Looking through your pics, I've found one called Vung Tau. The only Vung Tau I know of is an area of Vietnam. Is your picture to do with that?

The illustration is for " Eureka - Book of Discoveries". This one is about a poor fisherman finding a sunken treasure which was worth millions and consisted of ancient porcelain from the Ching Dynasty which sunk somewhere South of Saigon.

What is the Vernor Vinge book you've done the cover for?

The book was called "A Deepness in the Sky". It was commissioned for the French edition by a French publisher. It was one of my very first complete fantasy pictures created in Lightwave.

What are you working on now?

I am just beginning a big publishing project creating all the deities through the ages. Because of the size of the project I have no doubt it will significantly advance my character-building skills.

So, Jurgen, have you got a present for our readers?

I couldn't real find any relevant or useful models. But I have some good high resolution seamless maps for close-ups of outside floors, which look really good and I found very useful. I used them as texture for a magazine cover.
